The Battle Goes on in the Arctic

For more than a decade, Congressional proponents of drilling in the Arctic have made persistent attempts to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to development.

In 2006, big oil backers used legislative tricks to pass separate bills in both the House and Senate to open up the Arctic Refuge to drilling.

But, thanks in part to more than 70,000 e-mails, letters, faxes and phone calls from Defenders’ supporters, they weren’t able to muster the votes needed to pass the legislation and the refuge remains intact.

And you can be sure that Defenders will continue to make protecting the Arctic refuge and the wildlife who call it home a high priority for years to come.
