Bald Eagles

The comeback of one of the oldest symbols of our nation is a true endangered species success story—and one Defenders helped write. Thanks to the banning of the pesticide DDT in 1972 and the passage of the landmark Endangered Species Act in 1973, this colossal bird of prey recovered at a faster pace than conservationists had ever expected. In 1963, only 417 nesting pairs lived in the lower 48 states. Today there are more than 7,000.
