Defenders' Experts
Pacific Fisher
Fishers are members of the weasel family. They declined or became extinct in
much of their range due to habitat loss and heavy trapping in the 18th century.
Reintroduction efforts are critical in re-establishing the fisher to former
portions of its range.
In the Field
Defenders has taken an active part in supporting and advocating for science-based recovery that includes comprehensive feasibility analysis.
Management and Policy
Management of Pacific fishers depends on solid science which is sensitive to the affects of changing Forest Service policies, environmental variables such as fire, and population monitoring in key areas where the fisher resides.
