Conservation Finance

Defenders contributes to current discussions on the status of public and private financing requirements and sources for the conservation of wildlife habitat on a national scale.

These reports present the results of a Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program (WHPRP) grant funded by the National Council for Science and the Environment. The reports consist of five state case studies and one synthesis report analyzing the extent to which land conservation expenditures and acreages have overlapped with conservation priorities outlined in each state’s Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP).

A spending efficiency analysis, a financial efficiency analysis of land protection costs, and a policy analysis are included in each report as well as recommendations as to how states can improve their land conservation strategies and alignment with the SWAPs.

Alignment of Land Conservation Spending with State Wildlife Action Plans
This report is two-fold: (1) to determine the extent to which spending on land conservation has aligned with the priorities in the SWAPs for five case study states (OR, MT, MO, FL, and MA); and (2) to synthesize the major findings from the case study states to assist other state SWAP coordinators in developing their land conservation system.
