Defenders' Experts
Renewable Energy and Wildlife
Generating clean, renewable electricity from sun, wind and geothermal sources is one of the best ways to reduce pollution, slow down global climate change and help wildlife survive in a warming world. Defenders of Wildlife is committed to guiding our nation’s transition to clean energy and securing a bright future for wildlife.
But while renewable energy offers many benefits, the development of utility-scale projects can have negative impacts on wildlife and wild lands if they’re poorly designed or built in the wrong places. That’s why Defenders is working to ensure that renewable energy is developed smart from the start.
Renewable Energy Fast-Track Projects in California, Nevada and Arizona
The interactive map below shows the approximate locations of renewable energy fast-track projects that are currently moving forward in the planning and development stages in California, Nevada and Arizona. The map does not include transmission projects or projects that are no longer eligible for funding under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
Marker Legend:
- Green: Renewable fast-track projects that Defenders supports due to implementation of "Smart from the Start" principles that minimize wildlife and habitat risks.
- Yellow: Projects that Defenders believes could potentially move forward, with modifications and/or mitigation to make them more wildlife friendly.
- Red: Projects that Defenders believes could have negative impacts on wildlife and habitat and require substantial modifications and/or mitigation to reduce their impacts.
