Rick Brown

Rick Brown Senior Resource Specialist


Areas of Expertise: Forest ecology, restoration and management, fire ecology, climate change, public lands policy, Oregon conservation issues

Rick Brown works on issues related to forest conservation, with an emphasis on the restoration and management of drier, fire-prone forest types in eastern Oregon and elsewhere in the West.  He fosters collaborative efforts involving conservationists, rural community interests and agencies to find mutually beneficial solutions.  Rick analyzes the implications of climate change for forest restoration and management, and provides scientific background on a range of topics for the Northwest office.  He also represents Defenders on a variety of technical and advisory committees. 

Before joining Defenders of Wildlife, Rick worked on national forest management issues for the National Wildlife Federation.  Prior to that, he was a biologist on the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon, and started his conservation career with the Oregon Rare and Endangered Plant Project. 

Rick Brown holds a BA from Reed College, and pursued graduate studies in ecology at Portland State University.  He is the author of Thinning, Fire and Forest Restoration: A Science-Based Approach for National Forests in the Interior Northwest, published by Defenders in 2000 and The Implications of Climate Change for Conservation, Restoration and Management of National Forest Lands in 2008.
